ABOUT NORTH SHORE CIVIC BALLET

NSCB is a not-for-profit dance company that has been providing performances and arts education to the Greater Boston community for more than 40 years. Founded in 1974 by Paula K. Shiff (artistic director) and Florence C. Whipple (associate director), NSCB has gone on to become the home to an ever-changing group of talented dancers made up of both seasoned professionals and aspiring young dancers.

The level of choreography and technique is far above what one would expect from a small company, where students are taught to enjoy and appreciate the process of learning how to dance. Rarely does one find such a dance company outside large cities, and we think NSCB is truly something of which our community can be proud.

NSCB continues to plan exciting dance seasons with new repertoire throughout the year. Help support dance, art, culture and the community by supporting your local organization.

ARTISTIC STAFF + BOARD MEMBERS

PAULA K. SHIFF

Co-Founder | Artistic Director | Board Member

Biography

Paula K. Shiff has devoted her life to dance. She started training with E. Virginia Williams at the Boston Ballet School and studied in New York at the American Ballet Theatre and the Martha Graham Studio. Ms. Shiff performed with the Boston Ballet. She also had full academic training with a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts.

In 1971, Ms. Shiff opened the Marblehead School of Ballet. She also has served on the faculties of the North Shore Community College and Salem State University. The unusual range of her training and experience gives her a unique approach to dance education. Rather than adhering to one style of training, she draws the best from many styles. Primary emphasis is always placed on correct alignment and on a graded approach to material so that the dancers extend their skills in a balanced way, without injury. They are prepared to go on in their training in many forms of dance. The school also emphasizes the appreciation of music and the history of dance.

In 2009, Salem State University recognized Ms. Shiff’s success and dedication with their Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts. Ms. Shiff currently guests teaches in the greater Boston area, NH, and Miami.

FLORENCE C. WHIPPLE

Co-Founder | Associate Director Emeritas

Biography

In 1972, Whipple joined the MSB’s faculty and led the children’s creative movement division. She also taught modern dance, created choreography, and co-developed educational programs for both public and private schools. Two years later, Shiff and Whipple co-founded the NSCB. Operating from the MSB, the NSCB continues to train both seasoned professionals and aspiring dancers on the North Shore. Upon her retirement from the school and the dance company, she was named an Emerita member of the MSB’s faculty and Emerita Associate Director of the NSCB.

Retirement from the MSB and the NSCB was the beginning of another chapter in Whipple’s career and the development of new collaborations. In 1989, she began to study Reiki and became a Reiki master in 1994. She co-directed two Reiki clinics for the North Shore Medical Center, as well as a private clinic located in Salem.

After teaching at North Shore Community College (NSCC) for over 40 years, she retired in 2009. During that time, she taught Creative Dance and co-developed the innovative course, ‘Art & Perception, with music instructor Kristin Webb and Duane Eichholz from the art department. With Webb, she developed a Certificate Program in ‘Wellness and Healing Arts’, and she taught Reiki in the program. They collaborated and co-authored the publication of ‘Reiki in Academia’ in Reiki International Magazine. In 2010, the NSCC awarded her the “Excellence in Teaching” award.
